“Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn and you will”. This is an extremely relevant quote from Vernon Howard. Skill is something to possess. But such skill needs improvement to attain higher levels of performance. Training is an indispensable tool to keep an organization and its people competitive. A gap in a professional skill is best addressed through adequate training. In the workplace, training, learning and development have gained impetus, over the last few years. In achieving the goals and objectives, it is crucial that the employees are exposed to the finest training possible. Today therefore, training has become an inherent part of human resource management and aims at bettering the employee performance in the organizational structure.
It is often noticed that the trainees are not motivated enough to go through a process of rigorous training. They are tired or lose focus. Sometimes, without realizing its importance, trainees find it meaningless and tedious. Here the task of the trainer becomes humongous as training should give a sense of pleasure rather than being a routine. It is rather an ‘educational process’ with a difference and effective training changes the entire attitude to work, ethics at work, sharpens concepts and existing skills, thereby enhancing the scope of performance.
In order to ensure quality training, it is always necessary to understand the essence of a trainer’s job. A good trainer can change the entire perspective or attitude to work. It is often believed that the best trainer is an experienced trainer. However, experience is just one important quality that a trainer must possess. This apart, it is absolutely essential that the trainer is confident about his knowledge of the material and then is able to assimilate his experience with it. Communication and delivering of the content will have to be seamless. The trainer must be well equipped to use a simple and easy language and retain the gravity of the training material. It is the instructor who will make training a pleasure and hence, a lot of energy and positive attitude become imperative for an enthusiastic learners’ crowd. One has to understand that the training material is not a source of entertainment. Hence, there will be dry and factual content for the trainees to go through. Thus, a good trainer will always have the aspiration and expertise to spin such dry stuff and cook up an interesting phenomenon. It all depends on how the material is delivered.
Active engagement of the participants will enforce energy into the class. The trainer should be able to engage the crowd with positive rhythm and energy. Training has to encourage participation and thus, provide enough room to the participants to interact and air their views. The learner should find some meaning in the training material only when he or she is involved. And such involvement will ensure effectiveness of training. The method of encouraging a debate or discussion is therefore, much more relevant than a dry lecture method. This also makes the learners matured and responsible in making the most out of the training material.
Story-telling is another successful aid to bring out the pleasures of training. It involves the process of recreating and making the course content relevant and yet, interesting. For this, the learning material has to be flexible for the facilitator to mould it with his magic wand and provide an incredible learning experience in the classroom.
No matter how interesting and fun-filled the training sessions are, one thing still remains equally important and that is a structured, well-knit and pre-planned method. The trainer will have to meticulously design the course content for which he or she has to first understand the learners’ behaviour, age group and mind set. The material will then have to be tailored to suit such requirements. Each activity related to training will have to be conceived, planned and prepared well ahead to ensure consistency in the learning experience.
It is the necessity of organized learning that has inspired the growth of several good training institutes. An institute provides the space for funneling the trainer’s knowledge and imparting the same among the learners. It helps sharpening and developing skills which already exist and make the workplace a space to achieve excellence. Although the large corporate houses have realized the need of the hour and have sufficient scope for learning and development, still there are organizations where this learning atmosphere needs to trickle down. The companies should show their eagerness to spend time and money in creating an amiable atmosphere for training. Achievement and growth will always be smooth if the employees are well-equipped in delivering work efficiently. And the only thing that would ensure cost effective and efficient performance is an excellent learning atmosphere with an organized scope of training.
